Omotola Talks About Her Time Magazine Honour

In April 2013, screen goddess Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (pictured above with Justin Timberlake) was honored as one of Time Magazine 100 Most Influential People in the World. According to Omotola, it's an achievement that will forever linger in her memory. She tells Encomium magazine:

Do You Believe In Luck?

Michael Taiwo, PhD

Many people deride the role luck has played in their success. They even deny having any! Some are embarrassed by the idea that they are lucky and others are annoyed if an attempt is ever made to show how luck has factored into their achievement. The leadership literature has not made matters any easier. Leadership gurus flood the market with clichés like ‘Luck is when preparation meets opportunity’, or ‘I have found out that the harder I work the luckier I become’, or ‘Luck is the residue of design.’ It is against this tide of conventional wisdom that I wish to swim. And this article is the first I will write in a three-part series to take a shot at this misguided popular opinion. I am going to argue here, and in the two articles coming after this one, that all successful endeavors have luck to thank. No one – whether an individual, a team or a nation – would be successful without luck and if you disagree with this statement then I have you right where I want you: the other side.

Be Your Own You! How to Own Your Street Style

By Jennifer Obiuwevbi
You may have heard the saying “Fashion is clothing and style is what you do with it“, and as we have all come to know style is quite personal. When it comes to street style, the personality factor becomes even more important. It is a combination of what is comfortable to you and a bit of exuberance. I’ve often been asked the question ‘what qualifies as street fashion?’ The answer is simple – anything.
Think of it this way, street fashion is the expressive way of telling your story. It is using pieces from different eras and cultures, putting them together to express the totality of your personality. Just likeOnos O, the BN Music Editor  and Terence Sambo of OneNigerianBoy, who both have signature looks, everyone has their mark. Now, to properly understand the concept of street style, you have to know the sub-cultures that shape it.
So, we’ve put together some examples of Street Style. Let’s check them out.
Punk Fashion
The ‘punk’ subculture basically involves ripped clothing, mohican hairstyles, safety pins, provocative accessories, multi coloured hairstyles, provocative t-shirt slogans and everything soft goth related. It ranges from deigns by Vivienne Westwood to rock bands. We got to see it play out on our favourite celebrities as the theme for the recently concluded Met Ball. Celebrities like Miley CyrusAnne HathawayNicki Minaj and Kim Kardashian all channelled their inner punk chick. Even Nigerian Celebrities like Denrele Edun and Eva Alordiah have been known to prove time and time again that punk is cool.

Preppy Fashion
For this subculture, think of the school uniforms in Gossip Girl. The fashion involves a lot of sweaters, chinos, button down shirts, Oxford shirts, kilt schoolgirl skirts and boat shoes. Basically anything that incorporates clothes that are school themed can be classified as preppy. From Britanny Spears ‘Baby, give me one more time’ video to modern fashion on the runways, preppy fashion has been been with us all the way. TV personality Efe Tommy has been seen rocking different variations of this look.

Gothic Fashion
When this subculture comes to mind I can’t help but think of Charlie Boy. The area fada made Goth make up even more popular in recent times, especially in the photo shoot he had with his wife and daughters. To pull this off, think smokey eyed eyeshadow, a lot of black clothing, heavy metal & coats and biker boots.

Hip-Hop
This is also known as urban fashion and is by far the most popular in Nigeria. They include wearing sneakers, ultra baggy jeans, denim jackets, hoodies, face caps and black American hairstyles like the punk or afro. Nigerian celebrities like Mode 9, Burna Boy, wiz kid and Psquare are known to rock both the old and new versions of this fashion and have created a following for it among Nigerians.

African Chic
This has not been verified as a subculture, but it’s very present in the Nigerian culture. From style bloggers to celebrities like Omawumi, Chidinma and Terrence Sambo everyone has a bit of African chic in them. It usually involves natural hair hairstyles, African inspired accessoreis and clothing in local materials like the ankara and kente.

Everyone has a street style and the only way to own yours, is to express your personality through your clothes. Granted you can decide to be more toned down and relaxed with your expression but the end result should be an extension of you. You could mix that Mango dress you bought a while ago, the okrika jacket you just couldn’t say no to and your mothers 1970′s boots. You’re allowed to be as abstract as possible because you aren’t dressing to conform, you’re dressing to stand out. The tools of fashion have been made available, all that’s left is what you build with it.
Do you have a street style? Share with us what you love to wear that truly defines you.

LK4 And Koketso Evicted From Big Brother Africa - TV/Movies - Nairaland

Having had two weeks of a love connection, with a few forces against their partnership, LK4 and Koketso have left The Chase tonight. South Africa’s Koketso didn’t even know that she was nominated. She had been placed on the chopping block by Selly who preferred saving Biguesas from Eviction.
The Ugandan Prince said a prayer earlier this evening before the Rubies had their dinner. Koketso was at his side as always, holding her man’s hand as he emotionally thanked the Almighty for the time spent with ‘friends’ and how much the BBA opportunity meant to him. Maria was so touched by his words that she thought Elikem was the one praying.

The Brave Warriors of Namibia will host the Super eagles of Nigeria in a 2014 FIFA world cup qualifier in Windhoek, Namibia. It will be recalled that the eagles defeated the Namibians 1-0 in the first leg in Calabar in June 2012. Ike Uche scored the only goal of the game.

The Super eagles can advance to the playoff round of the African qualifying zone, if they beat Namibia, and Malawi fail to beat Kenya. The reigning African champions can also extend their unbeaten run in FIFA World cup qualifiers to an astonishing 23 consecutive matches.

Atoke’s Monday Morning Banter: Skonki, Skele & Skillachi

By Atoke
It’s so good and exhilarating to be alive. The world is bright and beautiful. The birds are chirping so nice and musically…. Urgh! I can’t pull it off mehn! Nahh! I tried guys… I really did but Mondays ARE a drag! However, if I was going to look at it from the glass-half-full perspective, I’d say it’s 5 more days to the weekend so hurrah! So, what did you get up to this weekend? On this end, I basked in the the delightfully cool breeze that comes from two days of rain. It didn’t matter that there was no power and of course the cable signal started misbehaving when the rain started. It cut short my Superman marathon but it was fun while it lasted.  Watching a movie you saw as a kid with adult eyes is actually very heart breaking. As I watched Christopher Reeve in his tight spandex, all I could think of was “What? I actually grew up thinking this dude was zipping through the New York skies?”
The Superman franchise sold us sha! Many years ago, I knew this dude who had everything of his with the “S” emblazoned. Socks, backpack, notebooks, and towels… all with the Superman logo. He was a die hard comic book enthusiast.  I can’t remember his name now but everyone called him “Robo Robo.”  I don’t remember the origin of the nickname but it was always funny. Robo Robo tried very hard to shake off the name but it didn’t work. A few years ago, I saw him getting into his car in front of the Zenith bank on Admiralty way and I wanted to get his attention and then I realized I didn’t actually remember his name and I couldn’t start shouting “Robo Robo” at a grown man.
Who comes up with these nicknames? Some of them are very cool but some are just plain wrong!  When the NTA soap opera “New Masquerade” was airing, they introduced a new character called “Syracuse”. I don’t remember much about Syracuse but I remember that Syracuse was quite vertically challenged. Somehow or the other, everybody in the house in Ilorin started calling me “Syracuse”.  Somehow,  the nickname morphed from “Syracuse” to “Syra oni Syra”, to “Syra”. I couldn’t shake off the name and just thanked the deities above that it didn’t leave that house. So, I came home one holiday, and I must have been trying to gather sympathy from the wrong sources because I told my brother and he made it worse. He funkified the “Syra” to “Sera” which kind of sounds like “Sarah”.  Dearly beloved, that is how I got stuck with “Sera”.
Nicknames are not bad actually when they’re cute like “Tin Tin” or “Kess”;  but when you have “Bondo”/ “Jango”/”Rabitte”/ “Beast”/ “Dodongba” you begin to wonder why the universe is so unfair. There was a guy in my secondary school whose surname is “Adeoti” and somehow he got dubbed “Goatie”.  Then, as if it was not bad enough, his younger brother came and got called “Small goatie”. Then there are some nicknames that you dub yourself and everybody kind of buys into it… like my friend Kunle Bello. Everybody and their dog calls him “KB”. He went on to adopt it as his stage name “Kaboom – The Detonator”.  Yes, I sound bitter, he has such a cool nickname.
Anyway, please share your nickname with us and some of the funniest and most boring nicknames ever…. don’t forget to share the history and the embarrassing and not-so-embarrasing facts behind the names.
Have a fabulous week ahead. Don’t worry, it’ll soon be Friday.
Peace, love & cupcakes!
Toodles!

Tonto Dikeh falls on stage at Iyanya's concert last night

I'm not going to assume and say she was drunk when she came on stage to perform at the Kukere concert in London last night, but she definitely behaved odd. She said something about not wanting to wave because her armpit wasn't shaved and kept mouthing off until she fell.

They had to help her off the stage. #Pokothingz! Hehe.

Africanized bee swarm kills Texas man

A Texas man died after a swarm of Africanized bees disturbed by his tractor attacked, stinging him more than 1,000 times Saturday.
The bees were living inside an old chicken coop that Larry Goodwin, 62, was pushing over to clear off his Moody, Texas, property, neighbor John Puckett told CNN affiliate KCEN-TV.
"He lifted the whole hive and disturbed them all and they just came swarming out of there and trapped him on his tractor," Puckett said.
His daughter and neighbors rushed to help, but they said there was nothing they could do to save Goodwin.
"When we got to him, he was purple, he had thousands and thousands of bee stings on his face and arms," Tanya Goodwin said.
Puckett said his wife and daughter were stung 100 times. "I came pretty close to losing my family," Puckett said.
Allen Miller, whose company Bees Be Gone removed the hive after the attack, said he's seen more Africanized bee hives in the past few weeks than he normally sees in a year.
"If anybody has any brush or anything on their lands, please clear it, because they don't want to go through this," Tanya Goodwin said. "Nobody needs to go through this."
Africanized honey bees, known colloquially as "killer bees," are believed to have entered Texas in 1990 and have since spread to at least 10 other states, from California to Florida.
Africanized honey bees, which are hybrids of African and European bees, can be highly defensive around their nests and swarm more frequently than other honey bees, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The venom carried by honey bees has similar potency.
